(Ornament for the Year of Dragon)

It is the year of dragon here in Japan, so we put our dragon ornament on our display shelf alongside other new year stuff. We buy an ornament from the same company every year, and so far we have collected 4. Eight more to go, so eight more years until we get the whole set, I guess. Long way to go still, but that's part of the fun!! Cute ornament, right?

We only have one location in our place to display things, so the contents change depending on the time of the year. I put some pictures from Halloween and Christmas last year too. We are going to stick with the dragon ornament until early March when we have our Doll's Festival.

(Home Made Spinach Flat Pasta "Pappardelle" and My Pasta Machine)

I got a pasta machine for my birthday last week, so I decided to use it and make some plain and spinach pappardelle. I love wide and flat pasta, so pappardelle was perfect! By throwing some spinach into the dough, I also made it a bit healthier and beautifully coloured. We enjoyed a bit of them over Christmas dinner, but I got a lot left over! The pasta machine is going to be favourite toy for a bit, I think!

(Flower)250g ¥0.40($0.40)

(Organic Veggies from My Parents)

I received some organic veggies from my parents the other day. They grow them for their own consumption, but we really appreciate their care package because veggies are expensive here in Japan, and even more so for organic ones. I also got some organic rice too!! Big big thanks to my parents!!

Red Chilies Given to Us by a Nice Old Lady!

We finally had a nice weather that we had been looking for, so we took a bit of walk this afternoon! On our way, we met a nice old lady working in her veggie garden, and she gave us some fresh red chilies. It's difficult to get fresh ones at grocery stores here, so we were so happy and grateful. I hope we get an opportunity to return a gift sometime soon.

(Daigakuimo / Candied Sweet Potato)

Daigakuimo usually involves deep-frying chopped sweet potato before mixing them with melted sugar and sesame seeds, but I decided to cook them slowly on a pan because I don't like to deep fry things at home. Sugar and the sweetness of the sweet potato match perfectly, I think. It's my wife's one of the favorite dish, and I hope she enjoyed it. Real simple and fast to make. I think it beats feeding crisps to your kids for a snack!

材料 Ingredients

2011(Mexican Independence Day in Japan)

We visited Mexican Embassy in Tokyo for celebration ceremony of the Mexican Independence Day yesterday. After speeches, raising of the flag, and music, we enjoyed buffet style of lunch. The food was great because we actually got to enjoy Mexican dishes. I had missed that a lot, so my wife must have a lot more. I think the embassy did a great job for Mexican residents and their families here in Japan.

After our visit to the embassy, we spent all day in Tokyo window shopping, visiting cafes etc. It was a nice day out. Viva Mexico!!

(Habanero Pickles)

To be honest, I was never a big fan of spicy food. Especially with Japanese dishes, I always thought that spiciness never did justice to them. Yes, we have our wasabi and Japanese mustard, but it is quite rare to see Japanese people soaking sashimi (raw fish) or soba (buckwheat noodles) in sauce full of wasabi. Always a 'hint' of something, so that it will never overwhelm the taste of the ingredients. Having said that, I have begun to enjoy spicy things when it comes to sandwiches, noodles, and others that tend to hold their own even in the midst of spicy toppings. We even grow habanero plant on our porch! We made a sort of pickle kinda dish, so here it is!

材料 Ingredients

(Home Grown)
(Lemon Juice)150ml
塩(Salt)適量(Suitable Amount)

2011 ②(Matsuri Tsukuba Festival 2011 Part 2)

We went to a Japanese summer festival in Tsukuba City yesterday. We spent a bit of time getting ready in our Yukata (Kimono-like traditional summer ware) and headed down around 5pm. We watch the Nebuta parade, shopped around for munchies, and walked around to see all other attractions. I guess we were a little late to see various stage events (dances and music performances, comedy skit and the usual), but we got there just in time for the bit parade. By the time we got around to searching for some munchies, some of the food stalls were beginning to close up, but we did get some nice herb sausages, tantoori chicken, and noodles. We bought some extra to take home too! Overall, it was a lot of fun. Great weather, but not too hot either. Above all, we got to wear our Yukata for the first time and the last time this year!

2011(Tsukuba Festival 2011)

This weekend is Tsukuba Festival (Matsuri Tsukuba). I am quite fond of Japanese festivals, because they have excellent stalls that provides me with good food. It is also a chance for us to wear Yukata (Kimono-like traditional Japanese summer wear)! It always takes long to prepare, because we are not use to wearing them, but it's all worth it in the end, because we enjoy the whole atmosphere of being festive. We haven't had the opportunity to wear our Yukata this summer yet, so this would be our first and last chance to do so this year. Obviously, I am writing this before going to the festival, but I don't think I am going to upload this post until I am back, so I will leave it here. The forecast suggests that it's going to be rainy all weekend, so I need to keep my fingers crossed! I will write the next post when I get back!

(Care Package Full of Organic Veggies)

My parents grow organic veggies and rice for their own consumption. When they get a lot of them, they send some to my siblings and I. Today, I got a box full of colorful veggies and some rice, so I thought I'd take a picture of it. The box contained something like 10 different veggies, and I am already excited to see what I can make with them tonight. Thanks mommy and daddy!!

(Tomato Sauce)

The pizza we had the other night finished our stock of tomato sauce, so I made some more today. I consider it to be a fun thing to do on a weekend. I think there are many different ways of making tomato sauce, but below is the recipe I have been sticking to. Heat finely chopped garlic in the olive oil until on low heat until you begin to smell the garlic, and then cook finely chopped onion in it. Then add canned whole tomatoes, dried basil, dried oregano, and salt. Cook until it becomes thick like sauce, and leave it to cool. I then throw the sauce into the ziplock bag and store it in the freezer. I got this recipe from a book called "Happy Life Style 2" by Ishii Yoshie. I think she has the recipe online too, so I have attached an URL below for copyright purposes (only in Japanese though... sorry).

http://oixi.jp/happy/archive/10

材料 Ingredients

(Olive Oil)50cc

I put an extra dollar for seasonings and condiments that I didn't calculate above.

Today will most likely go over $10, but the sauce lasts a while so I guess it's ok.

(Message Bean)

My wife's birthday was a couple of weeks ago and as a part of the gift, I bought this message bean. It's basically a plant that you grow, and as it does messages appear on its leaves. It comes in a can with the seed already planted, so all you have to do is to keep the soil moist and wait. The massages came out in about a week, even though the direction said it could take up to 2 weeks. There are several different messages you can choose from, and use them as gifts. Both affordable and cute, it was definitely worth the smile on my wife's face when the leaves with messages came out. On top of that, the plant is still growing! We are excited to see how long that plant lasts. If you can find something like this in your country, I think it would make a nice gift!

(Peach Jello)

I made some jello today using canned peach. I separated the peace and the juice from the can, boiled the juice and diced the peach to small bite size pieces. Boiled the juice, mixed it with some gelatin powder, and pour it into small dishes with the chopped peach pieces. I garnished them with the mint leaves.

材料 Ingredients

(Oatmeal)

Oatmeal is surprising difficult to get at local grocery stores here. This is a package we got from Amazon here in Japan. Four packages of 300g meals for $14.00, what do you guys think?? Not too bad eh?

(Basil and Rosemary in Our Porch Outside)

We do have a small garden at the back, but due to the possibility of its soil being contaminated by the radiation, we decided to grow our usual basil, rosemary, and Italian parsley on a brand new soil in our porch. I enjoy seeing them grow, but I think I picked too much of Italian parsley because it's kinda dead now. Basil and rosemary are doing extremely well, and I will replant the parsley asap.

(Genovese Sauce)

Mook(Pia Mook), 2008.

I was out of stock for my Pesto Genovese and our basil plants were growing well, so I decided to make the sauce today. I find the sauce very versatile, and I use it frequently as pasta sauce, salad dressing etc... On top of that, the ingredients are easy to get, and there's not much involved in making it. I just put all the ingredients into a chopping machine, and let it rip. Some store the sauce in glass bottles, but I find that the basil oxidizes too fast that way. So instead, I store it in a ziplock bag and keep it in the freezer. That way I can thaw small pieces as I need them.

材料 Ingredients

(2 cloves)¥15($0.15)
(Parmesan Cheeze)20g ¥150($1.50)
松の実(Pine Nuts)20g ¥280($2.80)
(Extra Virgin Olive Oil)100ml ¥80($0.80)
塩(Salt)小1(1 tsp)
